Dolphin Stranding at Andern Point, Plymouth, Devon

Brief examination of the carcass:

 Date:               20/01/2006     

Recovered:     SX495492

Species:         Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)

Sex:               Male   

Length:          2.30 m

 

Condition:

Found on strandline (Figure 1). Damage to fins (wear and decomposition) bone from tip of beak missing and lower jaw exposed. Figure 2, the head showing damage to the beak and missing/broken teeth.  Bone in lower jaw exposed.  Figure 3 shows decomposition and decolouration of the skin, whilst Figure 4 shows the anus and reproductive opening - male.  Figure 5 shows wear and damage to the extremities the tail
